French Christmas Decor
Color is always a great starting point when decorating. Whether you’re a fan of traditional reds and greens or prefer more minimalist neutrals, you really can’t go wrong. One of my favorite holiday colors is Bordeaux red. It’s seasonal, yet so sophisticated. With this dark and rich shade, I might pair a bit of evergreen into my Christmas decor—such a chic combo.
A wonderful way to add color to your space is through natural elements: trees, wreaths, florals, etc. A green Christmas tree is a must, of course, and I love this pre-lit fir tree from National Tree Company. Top it off with a brass star or a satin bow for a French-inspired finishing touch. And this lush velvet tree skirt? Très chic!
Wreaths are another great way to bring greenery into your home for the holidays. This Christmas wreath from Balsam Hill looks particularly lifelike and so stunning with its gold accents. You can also buy fresh wreaths from local vendors—just keep in mind they won’t last as long.
When it comes to holiday decor, there’s nothing I love more than a colorful bouquet. Seasonal blooms like amaryllis, poinsettias, and red roses are just a few festive options to consider. You can mix in holly, ivy, or pine branches for a classic Christmas arrangement that’s both elegant and fresh.
If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace—like the ones found in the most stylish Parisian apartments—consider draping a fragrant evergreen garland along the mantel. String some velvet garland or twinkling lights, and hang some stockings for a simply chic setup for Santa’s arrival.
Textiles can also make a major difference in curating your French Christmas decor. A cozy blanket and some lush pillows instantly warm up a space. I usually avoid decorative throw pillows since they sometimes look kitschy, but rich fabrics like velvet and cashmere are a must. Drape a luxurious throw on your armchair and add a red velvet pillow for a Parisian pop of color. This green circle cushion is equally as elegant.
One key element of Parisian interior design is its mix of old and new. To bring the charm of a Haussmannian apartment at Christmastime to your home, try adding some vintage or vintage-inspired pieces. Distressed compote bowls, antique ornaments, or gold candleholders are just a few accents that can add so much character to your space. A gilded mirror above the fireplace is a Parisian interior staple, but I find it looks especially magical during the holiday, especially with a cozy fire crackling below.
Lastly, we can’t forget to discuss the best lighting for your French holiday decor. Candles are an absolute essential for lighting your space in holiday style. Tall candlesticks are sure to add sophistication and warmth while creating a lovely centerpiece. You also can’t go wrong with unscented pillar candles to enhance the holiday ambiance even more. Although lighting a candle is always a treat, I usually opt for these remote-controlled pillar candles for the same cozy vibe without worrying about a fire. Scented candles, especially from Trudon and Diptyque, are another easy way to elevate your space. Not only do they look beautiful throughout your home, but the fragrances will surely set the holiday mood.
French Christmas Ornaments
Ornaments are at the heart of holiday decorating. Since I reuse my ornaments every year, I’m not buying too many this season. However, I’ve found a lovely selection of French-themed ornaments to decorate your tree.
Many of them feature traditional French symbols like the Eiffel Tower and French pastries. These are all playful options to bring some character to your Christmas tree—and express your love for all things French! If you’re a collector, adding a new French ornament each year could even become a fun tradition. You might even dedicate a small tree to display them.
You can trim your tree with different styles too. Glass baubles are timeless on any Christmas tree. I also found a gorgeous selection of brass and vintage-inspired ornaments like this antiqued glass finial ornament and these red toile Christmas ornaments.
French Christmas Entertaining
The holiday season is all about gathering and celebrating with our loved ones. In France, they take this seriously with traditions like La Chandeleur and the heavily-anticipated Christmas Eve feast, Le Réveillon. That’s why French Christmas decor extends to the dining table, where elegant dinnerware and thoughtful presentation are important for creating festive magic.
For a holiday table that truly stands out, French dinnerware is a must. Bernardaud porcelain is some of the best, and their special Christmas line will make your table sparkle and shine. It’s certainly a splurge, but worth it for those with luxe taste.
If you’re after a more budget-friendly option with the same French flair, I recommend browsing Anthropologie. Their Festive Bistro collection is fun for the holidays and feels straight out of a Parisian cafe. Mugs, pie dishes, measuring cups, and more will look extra festive in your kitchen.
I’m also obsessed with their Holiday in the City line, which features designs of five famous cities, including Paris. This stoneware platter with a wintery view of the Eiffel Tower is perfect for serving up holiday treats—or even cookies for Santa! It would also make a lovely hostess gift.
Linens are a must for a well-dressed table. Timeless French brands like Couleur Nature and Garnier-Thiebaut make gorgeous tablecloths that instantly brighten your holiday table.
For effortless holiday hosting, I’d recommend investing in a few stylish serving pieces. This tiered dessert stand is an elegant way to serve small bites for a holiday apéritif. I’m also loving this cheery cheeseboard—perfect for presenting your favorite fromages during Christmas dinner. Add these cute cheese knives (featured in my Francophile gift guide) to complete the setup.
Le Creuset’s Noël collection is another favorite to make your holiday meals feel extra festive with their beautiful Dutch ovens and colorful serveware.
And don’t forget to consider drinkware. Whether you’re serving cocktails or champagne, elegant glasses are essential. I love these luxe wine glasses from the new The Met collaboration at Anthropologie—the Art Nouveau-inspired design is oh-so-chic.
Anything with metallic accents is always elegant for the holidays, and these gold-rimmed champagne flutes are especially glamorous. I can imagine serving my guests a Kir Royale in one of these at a holiday party—very refined!
Lastly, I love a well-styled bar cart for holiday entertaining. Include your favorite French spirits and chic barware, and be sure to add an elegant ice bucket to keep your wine perfectly chilled. Santé!
