How to Choose a Winter Perfume

1. Stick with Seasonal Notes

For a fragrance that is truly seasonal, you’ll want to focus on perfumes that feature warm, comforting notes like vanilla, amber, musk, leather, and patchouli. These base notes give a rich foundation to your perfume that is perfect for the winter months.

Bring in some depth with woody notes like cedarwood, oud and sandalwood—all grounding and warm. To spice things up, look for cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and other spicy notes that feel particularly festive.

If you’re a fan of sweet, edible scents, notes like caramel, chocolate, and praline will make you smell like a decadent dessert. Myrrh and frankincense are another two notes that smell like winter—a smoky, sensual vibe that you’ll love for a night out.

The perfumes I’ve included on the list above feature these very notes, so whichever one you choose, you’ll smell amazing this winter!

2. Choose the Right Formula

To ensure your scent stays with you throughout the day and into the evening, look for eau de parfum or parfum formulations. These have higher concentrations of fragrance oils, which means they’ll smell more intensely and last longer on the skin.

During the colder months, your perfume is less likely to evaporate quickly due to lower temperatures. If you prefer body mists and sprays, winter is the best season to wear them since they’ll hold up better than in the heat. However, they won’t be quite as strong as an eau de parfum.

Personally, I love to switch it up depending on my day. If I’m working at home, I’ll reach for a body mist or eau de toilette that I can easily reapply. For a long day or night out, I’ll go for an eau de parfum that I know will stay with me.

3. Test the Perfume on Your Skin

Perfume can smell completely different on your skin than it does in the bottle, all thanks to your unique body chemistry. To get the true feel of a fragrance, always try it directly on your skin (not just on paper testers). I like to spritz it on my wrist and let it sit for at least a few minutes to see how it develops. You'll get a better sense of how the scent interacts with you, and whether it's a good fit.

4. Sample Before You Commit

If I’m eyeing a perfume (especially if it’s expensive), I always ask for a sample to try before committing. Some fragrances that others swear by don’t always work with my skin, so testing it out is a must!

Sometimes I’ll even purchase the travel-size version just so I can test them over a few weeks and for different occasions to see if I’m truly in love with a scent.

With the holidays here, many beauty retailers and fragrance brands have put out perfume sample sets that allow you to try a range of scents. This could be an excellent time to find your signature winter scent!

5. Consider the Occasion

Consider the occasions when you'll wear your winter perfume. Are you looking for a day-to-day scent, something for special evenings, or a fragrance that's perfect for holiday gatherings? Different perfumes can suit various occasions, so it's a good idea to choose a fragrance that complements your lifestyle.

From warm, spicy notes to fruity and gourmand favorites, there is a winter perfume on this list for everyone. I hope this list sparks some inspiration as you find your next seasonal signature scent.
