Summer is finally here, and with it comes the irresistible urge to pack a bag and head to the beach. But before you grab your swimsuit and dash out the door, there are a few must-have beach essentials you need to ensure a perfect day by the water.

Forget the frantic scrambling for forgotten items or the frustration of realizing you're missing something key. This ultimate beach essentials list will equip you for a day of relaxation in the sun. These must-have items are also handy for a chill afternoon by the pool.

Growing up far from the coast (and also being naturally fair-skinned), beach trips were a rarity. Now that I live in France, I’ve found myself going to the beach more often, particularly when I’m in Bretagne or visiting the south of France. Over the years, I’ve curated a list of essential items that I consistently rely on for beach days.

15 Beach Essentials You'll Want in Your Bag This Summer

1. Sunscreen

beach essentials

Sunscreen, of course, is a non-negotiable beach essential. For the best protection, choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply liberally to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before heading out. You’ll want to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating. Don't forget areas like your ears, neck, and tops of your feet!

You can certainly get by with a single sunscreen, but I personally like having options. I pack a small pouch with a variety of formulas: a spray-on body sunscreen for quick application, an oil-free face sunscreen for my acne-prone skin, and an SPF lip balm. Depending on the day's plans, I might also add a sunscreen stick for quick touch-ups and an SPF powder for my post-beach makeup. Feel free to adapt this approach to your own needs - the key takeaway is to prioritize sun protection and choose a method that works for you!

2. Beach Towel

beach essentials list

This one's a given, but a beach towel is a staple for both lounging and drying off after a swim. I personally prefer a large, thin towel that rolls up and fits compactly in my beach bag. For extra comfort, I bring along two towels - one for sitting on and another for drying off. Beach chairs and portable beach mats are also convenient for long days at the beach, but unless you’re a frequent beachgoer, they’re definitely not necessary!

3. Sunglasses

what to bring to the beach for a day

A good pair of sunglasses is crucial for protecting your eyes from the sun. Look for sunglasses that offer 100% UVA and UVB protection. I’d highly recommend investing in polarized lenses that reduce glare off the water and sand. My favorite Ray-Ban wayfarers have served me well over the years, especially on those super sunny days. Quince also offers an affordable polarized pair in the same iconic shape for just $50.

4. Sun Hat

A wide-brimmed hat is your best friend at the beach. It shades your face, neck, and shoulders, protecting you from sunburn and keeping you cool. When choosing your perfect sun hat, opt for breathable material like straw or cotton.

If you're inclined to invest in a quality sun hat, brands like Lack Of Color, Freya, and Janessa Leone offer elegant options to elevate your beach attire. I’ve also found some affordable options that are just as chic from brands like GAP, J.Crew, and COS, featured below.

5. Book

To keep you entertained at the beach, pack a light read or your favorite magazine to enjoy seaside. My summer reading list includes a few new releases including “The Paris Novel” by Ruth Reichl, “Swan Song” by Elin Hilderbrand, and “Husbands & Lovers” by Beatriz Williams. Let me know your favorite beach reads below - I’m always curious to find new books.

Magazines are so nostalgic for me. I have fond memories of reading Seventeen magazine back in middle school. Lately, I’ve been picking up Elle and Vogue from time to time for some casual reading. I buy the French editions, so it’s also an entertaining way for me to maintain my French skills.

6. Water Bottle

summer essentials

A day at the beach can be dehydrating, so definitely don’t forget to pack a reusable water bottle. Aim to sip on water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Dehydration can sneak up on you quickly under the hot sun. This insulted water bottle from S’well will keep your drink cold for hours and it’s the perfect size to add to your beach bag.

7. Cover-Up

summer necessities

When you're not actively swimming or sunbathing, throw on a lightweight cover-up. Stick with natural, breathable fibers like linen and cotton. For post-beach plans, consider a cover-up that can seamlessly transition to evening, so you don’t need a change of clothes. A maxi dress or a breezy sarong are chic options that can shield your skin from the sun during the day and allow you to head straight to dinner or an evening out.

8. Flip-Flops

Comfortable, waterproof footwear is a must at the beach. Pack a pair of flip-flops or sandals that you can easily slip on and off for walking on hot sand and asphalt. A slim pair of Havaianas are my favorite option that is so easy to throw in your beach bag and rinse off after a long day in the sand.

9. Waterproof Phone Pouch

Bring a water-resistant phone pouch to protect your phone from sand, water, and even accidental drops. You'll be able to relax without having to worry about damaging your phone. You can find affordable options on Target and Amazon under $10. Definitely worth purchasing for peace of mind.

10. Portable Charger

If you're snapping photos or listening to audiobooks during your beach day, a portable charger is a must-have to ensure your phone stays powered up all day long. I prefer a cordless, compact option like the Anker Nano Portable Charger that fits easily in my beach bag.

11. Wet Bags

beach essentials

It's inevitable that some of your belongings will get wet at the beach. That’s where wet bags come in handy. They’re perfect for storing wet swimsuits, towels, and other damp items, keeping the rest of your things dry and sand-free. You’ll be thankful to have a few on-hand, especially if you plan to change post-swim.

12. Cooler

waterproof beach days

A compact cooler becomes essential if you plan to spend long hours at the beach. Pack it with plenty of cold drinks, snacks, and fresh fruits and veggies to keep you energized throughout the day. I personally use my lunch box which is lightweight and small enough to fit in my bag. Bonus tip: add some ice blocks and put your face mist inside to keep it cold and extra refreshing!

13. After-Sun Care

summer beauty essentials

After spending hours under the sun, it's important to pamper your skin. I’d highly recommend adding a few post-sun care essentials to your beach bag to soothe and hydrate your skin. Aloe vera gel is a classic choice for soothing sunburns and moisturizing parched skin.

For my upcoming trip to Malta this summer, I’m planning to pack the Caudalie Vinosun Protect After-Sun Repairing Lotion, one of my recent French pharmacy purchases. Additionally, consider investing in a cooling spray for quick and refreshing relief. Sun Bum's 'Cool Down' Spray is a highly-rated option that hydrates the skin and smells incredible.

14. Fan

The summer heat can be intense, especially at the beach. That's why a portable fan is an absolute beach essential. There are so many battery-operated fans available, but I’ve always preferred a simple hand fan for keeping cool. And they look incredibly chic! You can find a variety of beautiful options on Etsy that aren’t too expensive either. Imagine fanning yourself with this gorgeous hand fan.

15. Beach Beauty Essentials

I’ve already touched on the importance of sunscreen and after-sun care above, but here are some more beach beauty essentials. Add these items to your beach bag to take care of your skin and hair throughout the day and refresh your look for your post-beach plans.

  • Cooling Mist. A refreshing facial mist can be a lifesaver on a hot day. Look for a mist formulated with aloe vera or cucumber that are soothing and cooling. I swear by thermal water sprays from French pharmacy brands like Avene and Caudalie. Spritz yourself throughout the day to feel instantly refreshed.

  • Hair Brush. The beach can wreak havoc on your hair. If the water and wind are leaving your hair dry and tangled, be sure to pack a good hair brush. The Wet Brush is my favorite option for smoothing out knots on wet hair without causing breakage.

  • Hair Oil. To keep your hair protected from the sun, salt, and chlorine, bring along a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to nourish and hydrate your locks. My go-to oil for years has been the Davines OI Oil. I apply a few drops before a day at the beach to prevent frizz and moisturize my hair.

  • Hair Clip. Keep your hair out of your face with a claw clip. They’re also handy for beach-to-bar updos when you’re not sure what to do with your hair.

  • Lip and Cheek Stick. The key to beach makeup is to keep it light and natural. That’s why I love a natural lip and cheek tint like this ILIA Multi-Stick. Its creamy consistency makes blending a breeze, and the convenient stick format means no brush is needed. Opt for a sheer shade for a barely-there flush that enhances your natural beauty.

  • Waterproof Mascara. Don't let the water ruin your makeup. Invest in a reliable waterproof mascara like this one from L’Oreal to enhance your eyes without smudging or flaking, even after a dip in the ocean.

More Beach Essentials to Consider

  • Beach Umbrella. If you plan on spending extended periods under the sun, a beach umbrella is handy for providing extra shade.

  • Portable Speaker. A portable speaker lets you enjoy your favorite music or podcasts at the beach.

  • Beach Games. Pack some fun beach games to stay entertained - think frisbees, volleyballs, beach paddles, and a deck of cards.

  • Hydration Packets. Consider bringing a few hydration packets with electrolytes and minerals to boost your water. These can help prevent dehydration and muscle cramps, especially if you're planning on being active on the beach!
