What to Know Before Wedding Dress Shopping in Paris
Before booking appointments and packing your bags, there are a few things worth knowing.
Book appointments in advance
Most bridal boutiques in Paris work by appointment only, especially designer ateliers. If you have a specific designer or style in mind, it’s worth contacting the boutique ahead of time.
If you’re traveling to Paris specifically to shop for your wedding dress, you’ll obviously have to plan your appointments around your trip. The earlier you book, the more flexibility you’ll have to fit in your favorite boutiques (and possibly visit multiple shops in one day).
I recommend starting your search around 8 to 12 months before your wedding. This gives you enough time for ordering, fittings, alterations, and any unexpected delays.
Most shops make booking simple with an online appointment system through their website. Others will invite you to call or email them.
Wear neutral undergarments
A small detail, but wear seamless beige or nude underwear and a simple bra that won’t distract from the dress. The wrong undergarments can change how a gown fits and looks.
You might also bring along any shapewear you’ll wear on your big day. However, it can be helpful to first try the gown without anything underneath so you can see how it naturally fits your body, then seek out shapewear for your specific dress and silhouette.
Go easy on makeup
Skip the heavy makeup for your wedding dress appointment. A little makeup is usually fine, but I’d avoid anything that could potentially stain light fabrics.
The same goes for fake tan.
This doesn’t mean you have to show up looking like a total hot mess. In fact, it’s a good idea to feel put together before your appointment. Style your hair, clean your nails, and wear a natural makeup look. Anything that helps you imagine how you’ll look and feel in the dress on your wedding day.
Bring your accessories
If you already have your wedding shoes, veil, or jewelry, bring them along. You may want to try them out with your potential dresses. Many bridal shops in Paris have heels and other accessories available, but trying everything together can help you picture the final look.
Don’t expect a typical American bridal experience
In a glamorous city like Paris, you might expect bridal appointments to be even better than the ones you see on shows like Say Yes to the Dress.
In reality, many Paris bridal boutiques are quite small and more casual than what you might see on TV. The experience is much more about finding the right dress than it is sipping champagne.
And while coming to Paris to buy your wedding dress sounds incredibly romantic, I don’t necessarily recommend flying here just for the dress if you don’t already live in France. Having your dress closer to home makes everything (fittings, alterations, etc.) so much easier.
Apply for a VAT refund
If you do end up finding your dream dress in France and you live outside the country, you may be eligible for a VAT refund. This basically allows you to get back some of the tax you paid on your purchase, which can be a nice perk when you’re already investing so much in your wedding. I have an entire guide on how to claim a VAT refund that takes you step-by-step through the process.
