I’ve been shopping French pharmacies for years now, and every season I find myself reaching for a new edit of essentials that feel perfectly made for the moment. Now with spring in full swing, there is no better time to refresh your beauty cabinet. If you’ve been meaning to give your regimen a seasonal overhaul but don’t know where to start, consider this your guide. These are the six categories I revisit every spring, and the specific French pharmacy finds that have earned a permanent place in my rotation.

Begin with Body Care

Let’s begin this spring beauty refresh with the body, the first matter of business being exfoliation. Winter does a number on the skin, especially after all those months of central heating, cold air, heavy creams, and reduced sun exposure. That’s why I always start with a goo scrub down in the shower.

I’ve become completely devoted to La Rosée’s nourishing body scrub. What I love about it is how gentle it is. This is not the kind of aggressive exfoliant that leaves you raw and irritated. It works beautifully for sensitive skin and buffs away dullness without stripping the skin’s moisture barrier.

I must add that La Rosée doesn’t get nearly the recognition it deserves, at least not outside of France. Maybe it’s because their products are harder to find in the U.S. You’ll see them stocked in most French pharmacies, however, and many of my French girlfriends are obsessed with the brand. Let’s hope they gain more of a presence in the States soon!

I pair the scrub with the Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Floral shower gel, the floral iteration of the iconic dry oil that has been a French pharmacy staple for decades. If you’ve ever smelled the original Huile Prodigieuse and had an instant coup de cœur, the floral version is also worth checking out. It’s a little softer, more romantic.

After lathering up with the body wash, I follow with the Huile Prodigieuse oil in the same scent after drying off. Layering the two allows the fragrance to really linger on the skin all day without ever feeling like you’re wearing perfume.

Switch to Lighter Hydration

The move from winter to spring calls for a real reassessment of your moisturizer. The rich, occlusive creams that saved you in January have no place in May. These formulations tend to sit heavily on skin and leave you looking greasy by noon. What you want now is hydration that feels weightless but still nourishes. Lucky for us, the French pharmacy has an excellent selection.

My first recommendation is the Embryolisse Lait-Crème Fluid+ cream, the lighter version of the legendary Lait-Crème Concentré that makeup artists have been using backstage for years. It absorbs quickly, won’t pill under SPF or makeup, plus it’s versatile enough to use on both your face and body. That’s one thing that I adore about all of Embryolisse’s products: they are designed to be multi-purpose.

For those who prefer an even lighter, more cooling texture, the Avène Hydrance Aqua-Gel is exceptional. The watery-gel formula is super refreshing, with none of the tackiness you sometimes get from gel moisturizers. Avène’s thermal spring water is the hero ingredient, and the formula is so well-tolerated that it suits even the most reactive skin types.

And then there are CC creams for those who want a little color alongside their moisture. Erborian makes one of the most popular options at the French pharmacies. It gives that blurred, skin-perfecting effect without any of the weight of a traditional foundation.

The shade ranges for BB and CC creams can be limited, so it’s worth testing it out on yourself before you commit. My esthetician here in Strasbourg recently gave me the Bioderma Sensibio AR+ CC cream in Light, and while I’m completely won over by the texture and the coverage, I’ll admit I’m a little too pale for it right now. I’m saving it for summer, when I have more color to work with.

One more tip worth trying out: before you apply any moisturizer, spritz on a little thermal water first. Let it sit for a moment, then apply your cream on top while the skin is still slightly damp. It sounds like a small thing, but the difference in how deeply your moisturizer absorbs is genuinely noticeable.

Don’t Skip SPF

SPF is important every single day, no matter the season. But in spring, when we’re starting to spend more time outside, it becomes even more top of mind.

Lately I’ve been noticing more and more sunscreen sticks from French pharmacy brands, something Korean beauty has honestly been ahead of for years. I do wonder if K-beauty’s growing popularity in France has something to do with it. Whatever the reason, I’m here for it.

I recently picked up the NUXE sun stick serum, and so far I’m really enjoying it. It’s designed to hydrate skin and strengthen the skin barrier all while offering SPF50+ protection. The texture actually reminds me a lot of the Abib Quick Sunstick protection bar (another one of my favorite sunscreen sticks). For touch-ups throughout the day, I think it’s such a convenient format to have on hand.

There are endless French pharmacy sunscreens out there, but if I had to recommend one that I think everyone should try, it would be the SVR Sun Secure Blur. I’ve talked about this product before and I will keep talking about it, because the texture is unlike anything else in the SPF category. It starts as a lightweight mousse, then melts into the skin leaving a matte finish. If you have oily or combination skin and have struggled to find a sunscreen you actually enjoy wearing, this one is worth the search.

Soothe Seasonal Allergies

As much as I love spring, it’s also the season of itchy eyes, constant congestion, and irritated skin. The good news is that the French pharmacy has several solutions to alleviate these allergy symptoms.

For anything medication-related, I genuinely encourage you to talk to a pharmacist directly. If you’re in France, you can walk into almost any pharmacy and get personalized advice from a pharmacist. They’ll ask questions, assess what’s going on, and recommend something specific to your situation.

I’m always quite surprised by how often I’ve been recommended essential oils at the French pharmacy. Back in the U.S., natural remedies exist, but they’re not exactly something your doctor or pharmacist is going to bring up unprompted. But in France it’s completely matter-of-fact, and the more I’ve actually tried them, the more I understand why. For allergies especially, they can be more effective than you’d expect.

The brand I see the most at the pharmacies is Pranarôm, and their Sinus Formula essential oil blend is a must-have for this time of year. You apply it with a Q-tip just under the nose and it immediately refreshes your nasal passages. It also works as a natural vapor rub. Just massage a few drops into the neck, chest, and nose area and you’ll feel the difference pretty quickly.

If you need something a little more powerful to clear things out, a nasal decongestant is worth keeping on hand, either in medication form or as a spray, which works almost instantly.

For dry, irritated, itchy eyes specifically, I’ve been using the Pranarôm noble chamomile hydrosol spray. When I start rubbing at my eyes too often, I soak two cotton pads in the hydrosol and rest them over my eyes like a mask for a few minutes. It really does the trick for me.

Glow From Within

Beauty in the French tradition has never been only about what you put on your skin. It’s equally about what you put in your body. Spring is when I revisit my wellness routine just as deliberately as my skincare one, and there are two products I reach for every year without fail.

The first are sun protection vitamins. These are a distinctly French phenomenon: supplements that you begin taking a couple of months before significant sun exposure to help protect and prepare the skin from the inside out.

They’re a standard seasonal ritual in France and are widely available in pharmacies come spring. They’re harder to come across in the US, but Aime makes an excellent version called Summer Glow that I’d highly recommend tracking down if you’re interested.

The second is something simpler but just as important: hydration tablets. I’ve been using the ones from Hydratis for years now. My ex’s mom is a French pharmacist, and she always had several tubes on hand.

Drop one into a glass of water and you get a slightly fruity, very fizzy drink. It’s not aggressively salty or sickeningly sweet the way some electrolyte products can be. I almost always have a few tubes in my cabinet, and lately I’ve been enjoying the kiwi flavor. If you can’t source them in the States, nuun makes similar hydration tabs that will keep you just as hydrated this spring.

Find Your Signature Scent

No seasonal refresh feels complete without a scent to go with it, and the one I keep coming back to every spring is Fleur de Figuier from Roger & Gallet. Fig is one of those notes that feels both warm and fresh at the same time. In this fragrance, it’s green and slightly creamy, with an elegance that doesn’t lean into old-fashioned territory.

You can find it in multiple formats (eau de toilette, shower gel, body lotion) but I’ve been currently using the hand cream. It moisturizes beautifully, but really what I buy it for is the little hit of scent I get each time I apply it.

If you’re looking for something to layer into your body care routine specifically, the Nuxe Prodigieux Floral Le Parfum is a natural extension of the body wash and oil we talked about earlier. It has the same grapefruit, magnolia, and white musk notes but with a stronger projection.

And if you want something a little greener and more citrus-forward, Caudalie recently came out with new glass bottles for their fragrance line. Thé des Vignes is my favorite of the range and feels perfectly appropriate for spring and into summer. With notes of white musk, neroli, and ginger, you can easily wear this one from morning to evening all season long.

Whether you’re a serial French pharmacy shopper or you’re just beginning to explore what these shelves have to offer, I hope this beauty and wellness edit inspires you this spring.
