If you're planning a trip to Paris this summer, you'll want to make sure your wardrobe is on point. It’s essential to plan your packing list accordingly to ensure you're both stylish and comfortable during your visit. If you’re having trouble navigating the Parisian dress code, I’ve got you covered with everything you need to know about what to wear in Paris in the summer.

What to Wear in Paris in the Summer

The Parisian Dress Code

The Parisian dress code isn't about strict rules, but rather a philosophy of effortless chicness. The key is to look put together without appearing overly fussy. Think clean lines, simple silhouettes, and well-made, timeless pieces.

Parisians embrace a certain aesthetic, but they also value personal style. While I frequently use terms like “Parisian style” and “French girl style” on my blog, these only express a general theme of dressing in Paris. Across the city, you’ll see stylish Frenchies expressing their individuality through fashion. Don't be afraid to add your own unique flair to your outfits too.

Paris has its fair share of formal and upscale establishments, so it's advisable to pack a slightly dressier outfit for such occasions. A dress or a nice blouse paired with dress pants or a skirt can be suitable for these situations. Additionally, remember to pack a swimsuit if you plan to visit public pools or take a day trip to nearby beaches.

So, what not to wear in Paris? Firstly, steer clear of overly revealing attire. While Parisians appreciate style, too-short shorts or skimpy tops are best for the beach. Opt for shorts with a longer inseam and tops that offer more coverage.

All-day activewear is another faux pas in Paris. In general, the French prioritize looking put-together, even on casual outings. This doesn’t mean you need to dress formally all the time or sacrifice comfort, but save your yoga pants for the gym. Instead of athletic shorts, choose tailored shorts; swap leggings for slim-fitting trousers, and trade baggy t-shirts for a classic white tee.

Weather in Paris in Summer

In summer, Paris experiences generally warm and pleasant weather with average temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the high 70s. However, there can be variations throughout the season. Does it rain a lot in Paris? Not necessarily, but occasional showers are a possibility. To be prepared for anything, check the forecast a few weeks before your trip and adjust your packing list accordingly.

It’s always a good idea to pack a light rain jacket or a foldable umbrella for peace of mind. At the same time, don't forget sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun's rays. These summer essentials will be especially practical for hot days when you’re exploring the city outdoors.

Parisian summers bring long long daylight hours, relatively mild temperatures, and occasional rainfall. By packing with the weather in mind, you’ll be able to enjoy the beauty of the city in summer.

Choose Lightweight Fabrics

Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to combat the heat. Pack lightweight layers such as blouses, shirts, and cardigans that can easily be added or removed as temperatures fluctuate.

Evenings in Paris can be cooler, so pack a lightweight jacket, cardigan, or scarf that can easily be added to your outfit when needed.

Wear Neutral Colors

Opt for a color palette of neutral tones such as white, beige, navy, and black, which are versatile and easy to coordinate. Pack items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits, maximizing your wardrobe options while minimizing the number of items you need to bring.

Paris Summer Packing List

Dresses

Summer in Paris can be quite warm, so it's essential to wear lightweight and breathable clothing. Dresses are the easiest way to do that. You can easily throw them on, and all you have to do is coordinate your accessories.

Opt for lighter fabrics like cotton, linen, or silk that will keep you cool in the summer heat.

When it comes to prints, floral, polka dots, and stripes are always stylish in summer. Alternatively, you can opt for a neutral dress that allows you to mix and match with different outerwear and accessories.

I’d opt for classic silhouettes that you can style in multiple ways. A shirt dress is a chic, summer-ready option that is smart for city dressing.

Midi linen dresses are another popular choice that you can style with sneakers or sandals for the daytime. Their modesty makes them ideal for visits to churches and other places of worship.

For a fun and flirty addition to your travel wardrobe, you can’t go wrong with a printed mini dress. Brands like Reformation have some of my favorite options with romantic silhouettes that still look appropriate for the city.

A silky midi dress is a lovely option for the evening, but you can also dress down with a pair of sneakers and a crossbody bag.

Tops

Parisian style is all about striking a balance between effortless and chic. When it comes to tops for summer in Paris, focus on versatile pieces that can be easily mixed and matched to create multiple outfits.

Linen is the fabric of choice for Parisian summers. Pack a few lightweight linen blouses or button-down shirts. They pair perfectly with almost any pants or skirts, and you can throw them over any outfit for an extra layer.

Tank tops are another versatile basic that are essential for layering in the summer heat. Wear them on their own during the hottest days or layered under a sheer blouse for added coverage.

You can never go wrong with a classic t-shirt in neutral colors like white, black, and navy. These staples can be worn in a variety of ways while being simultaneously comfortable.

Don't forget a lightweight knit sweater for those occasional cooler days or evenings. A cashmere or merino wool blend will provide warmth without being bulky. Opt for a classic crewneck or a v-neck that can be layered over dresses, tees, or blouses.

Bottoms

When choosing what bottoms to pack for Paris, tailored shorts and flowy skirts are your best options.

Tailored shorts are incredibly easy to style and perfect for hot summer days. I’d opt for a slightly longer length. Depending on the weather, you might prefer pants instead. Both are appropriate choices for summer in the city.

Go for skirts in neutral colors for the most versatility or mix in a floral printed skirt for some added interest. While I love a mini moment, I’d also suggest packing a midi skirt in a flowy fabric like silk or cotton. It can be dressed up with a blouse and heels for a museum visit, or dressed down with a t-shirt and sandals for exploring the city. Stick with a solid color or a subtle print that will pair well with your tops.

If you can expect some cooler days in Paris, you might also bring along a pair of straight leg jeans. I prefer to stay more covered in the city, especially when using the metro or visiting crowded places. You could also swap the jeans for a tailored trouser if you want more coverage in the heat.

Shoes

No matter where you travel, comfortable footwear is a must. And you don’t have to compromise on style when preparing for your trip to Paris.

For every day, opt for a pair of stylish sneakers that you can walk in all day long. You’ll see locals and tourists alike wearing classic white sneakers. They go with everything, and your feet will thank you!

Sambas are having a major moment this season and happen to be my personal favorite for a trendy summer sneaker. Try a colorful pair for a pop of color or stick to a more subdued tone.

Veja is another popular Parisian sneaker brand that can do no wrong. I’ve had my Veja Campo sneakers for a few years now, and they’ve held up impeccably.

Beyond sneakers, I’d recommend packing a slightly upgraded shoe like classic ballet flats or loafers. Thankfully, mesh ballet flats are set to be a huge trend for summer 2024, so you can look on-trend while allowing your feet to breathe. I also love slingback flats for a breathable and equally sophisticated option.

When temperatures soar, comfortable sandals are essential. Opt for flat gladiator sandals that pair well with dresses and skirts, or choose a chic pair of mules for a French girl look. Comfort is key, so I’d avoid sky-high heels or anything that might cause blisters on long walks.

A pair of kitten heels is an elegant option if you plan to enjoy a formal dinner or evening event.

Accessories

Accessories serve as the finishing touches to your Parisian summer looks. A classic leather belt that matches your bag and shoes is a simple way to upgrade a basic ensemble.

Summer demands sunglasses, be it oversized frames, cat-eye designs, or classic aviators.

Along with your everyday jewelry, consider packing a pair of statement earrings to effortlessly transition your outfits from daytime exploring to evening soirées.

When deciding which bag(s) to bring, I find myself in two camps. A crossbody bag is so convenient for staying hands-free while exploring the city. On the other hand, I love a bottomless bag for carrying everything I might need on a day out — water bottle, keys, camera, etc. Opt for what best suits your needs, or pack both if you’re an indecisive overpacker like me.

For nights out in Paris, a small evening clutch is a great accessory to elevate any outfit.

A reusable tote bag is another practical item for any unexpected shopping finds or souvenirs you may pick up during your trip. While not essential to pack (you can find several aesthetic options in Paris), having one on hand throughout the day is always handy.

Outerwear

Parisian summers are delightful, but they can be fickle. Sunshine one minute, a sudden downpour the next. Packing the right outerwear ensures you stay comfortable and stylish, no matter what the weather throws your way.

I’d highly recommend packing a lightweight blazer in linen or cotton. It looks incredibly polished over casual and dressy outfits and provides warmth on cooler evenings.

A trench coat is a Parisian staple, but it can feel heavy in the summer. Consider a lightweight trench in a neutral tone like beige or camel or a cropped version in a breathable cotton fabric. This provides a chic option for unexpected rain showers.

Don't underestimate the power of a lightweight knit. A neutral-colored sweater can be worn over any outfit or draped around your shoulders for chilly mornings or evenings. A classic crewneck cardigan is not only on-trend this season, but it’s easy to carry around the city for when you need it.

Evening Attire

Parisian nights out have a certain je ne sais quoi. While the city maintains a more casual dress code during the day, there's a discernible shift in style when it comes to evening attire.

For an evening out, whether it's a visit to an upscale cocktail bar or a formal dinner, multi-purpose pieces are essential for putting together polished looks.

Don't underestimate the power of separates. Pack a slip skirt or tailored trousers and pair them with a chic blouse or a statement top. Endless outfit combos for different venues.

For more casual occasions, denim can be elevated for the evening. Bring along a pair of dark-wash, high-waisted jeans and pair them with a silk blouse and statement earrings for a chic jeans-and-nice-top ensemble.

If dresses are more your style, a silky slip dress is a sophisticated option for Paris. Layer yours with a blazer or style it solo with strappy sandals. Either way, you might consider packing a compact steam iron to smooth out any wrinkles; alternatively, hang it in the bathroom while you take a hot shower!

Comfort is still key, but you can elevate your footwear for the evening. Pack a pair of pointed-toe flats, sleek mules, or chic mid-heel sandals. I’d avoid super-high heels or anything that might cause blisters after a night out.
