What I’m Packing for a Fall Weekend in Paris

This weekend, my boyfriend and I are taking a much-anticipated trip to Paris. With a few days off and a need for a quick getaway, we decided it was the perfect time for a little vacation together.

It’s been nearly two years since I last visited the city, a place that holds a special place in my heart. I lived in Paris during my first trip abroad about five years ago, and I can’t help but romanticize its charm. Although both of us have lived in Paris at different times, this will be our first experience of the city together, so we’re both excited.

Our plans are quite unstructured: we’ll revisit some gardens, explore a few exhibitions, and catch up with friends. We’ve done most of the touristy things before, so this trip is more about savoring the fall atmosphere and revisiting our favorite memories.

As fall approaches, I’m excited to do some shopping near Saint-Sulpice (where I’ll be browsing the new collections from Maje and Sandro) and Rue de Rivoli, which offers some of the best shopping in Paris.

Packing for this weekend is all about simplicity and versatility. I’ve curated a small selection of neutral-colored, mix-and-match pieces that can easily transition from day to night. Given the unpredictable fall weather, I’ve included a few light jackets to layer as needed. Alongside my clothing, I’ve packed my favorite everyday jewelry— a dainty bracelet, hoop earrings, small rings, and a pendant necklace.

Below, I’m giving you the details of each item I’m packing for my long weekend in Paris. I hope this packing list inspires you as you prepare for your own mini fall getaway to the city.

Fall Weekend in Paris Packing List

1. Trench Coat

A trench coat is essential for any fall trip to Paris. It’s the quintessentially chic outerwear that’s perfect for autumn’s unpredictable weather.

I chose a beige color that complements the rest of this capsule wardrobe, but any neutral trench would be ideal for a weekend in Paris. Wear it for daytime sightseeing to keep you warm and effortlessly put together.

If you’re expecting chillier days, I’d suggest swapping the trench for a long wool coat.

2. Short Jacket

In addition to your trench coat, pack a short jacket for those cooler days when you need an extra layer. A cropped wool or leather jacket works wonderfully for bundling up on a fall day in Paris.

For my weekend trip, I selected a chic gray option, but any versatile color will do—you might even try an autumnal motif like plaid or houndstooth.

This piece also transitions effortlessly from a day at the Louvre to an evening at a cozy bistro. And if temperatures dip more than you anticipated, you can layer it under your trench coat for extra warmth.

3. Knit Top

Pack a couple of sweaters to layer over your outfits. A chic turtleneck or a casual crewneck will keep you warm all weekend long.

Since I’m visiting Paris in September when the weather is still relatively warm, I chose a sleeveless knit tank. Depending on when you visit, you might prefer a heavier knit.

When it comes to color, fall neutrals like soft taupe, olive green and cherry red are parfait for the season. I opted for a black knit to coordinate with the other pieces in this wardrobe.

4. Layering Basics

Simple tees are a staple for layering in the fall. They’re easy to pack and incredibly versatile, so it’s a good idea to bring more than one!

I’ve chosen a classic white tee for this weekend wardrobe. It pairs perfectly with jeans or a skirt and can be layered under both jackets for a casual day look.

If the weather is chillier, you can swap the short-sleeve tee for a long-sleeve version, and consider materials like cashmere or wool instead of cotton. Either way, you can’t go wrong by packing a few versatile basics.

5. Mini Skirt

I have a special fondness for mini skirts in the fall—maybe because they remind me of back-to-school season and wearing my uniform skirt. Regardless, this piece is both stylish and practical for Parisian fall.

Pair it with tights and knee-high boots to stay warm while looking chic in the city.

A black wool mini is a great addition to my Paris wardrobe, effortlessly transitioning from daytime activities to evening outings with just a few simple tweaks. Plaid and pleated options are also perfect for achieving French fall style.

6. Black Jeans

A casual pant is essential for a fall weekend getaway. Go for high-waisted trousers or sleek, fitted jeans in a versatile color like black or dark blue. They’ll keep you looking put together as you explore the Luxembourg Gardens or stroll along the Seine.

Since my weekend plans are more relaxed, I added black jeans to my packing list. They tend to be less fussy than trousers too, so I don’t have to worry about creasing.

What I love most about a black or dark-colored jean is that they can easily dressed up or down. With the right top, they can even pass for a pair of well-fitting pants.

7. Sunglasses

Even in the fall, Paris can have plenty of sunny days. A stylish pair of sunglasses are essential for daytime adventures in the city.

Chic styles like cat-eye and oval are my favorite for achieving that undoubtedly Parisian look. For my weekend away, I chose a sleek black pair that goes perfectly with the rest of the wardrobe.

8. Crossbody Bag

A small crossbody bag is perfect for carrying your essentials while exploring Paris. For this Paris weekend capsule, I chose a classic black crossbody from A.P.C. that looks oh-so-chic for grabbing brunch at Holybelly before an afternoon of shopping in Le Marais.

Depending on your evening plans, consider bringing a convertible bag that can transition from a crossbody during the day to a clutch or shoulder bag at night. Since my evening activities were casual, I used my crossbody throughout, but you might prefer to bring a more evening-appropriate option.

9. Sneakers

Comfortable yet stylish sneakers are a must-have for getting around Paris on foot. I can’t recommend Veja sneakers enough, but for something incredibly on-trend, Adidas Sambas are a must. I’ve been spotting these shoes everywhere around the city.

No matter what brand you prefer, make sure they can be styled with both casual and slightly dressed-up outfits. In my opinion, white sneakers will be the most versatile and seamlessly coordinate with your fall wardrobe.

10. Knee-High Boots

Knee-high boots are the quintessential fall footwear for cool Parisian style. While they certainly aren’t the easiest to pack, they’re incredibly versatile. Style them with jeans, pants, skirts and dresses, they practically go with everything.

For my long weekend in Paris, I opted for flat riding boots, ideal for all the walking I’ll be doing. If you prefer something dressier, heeled boots are equally chic and perfect for evening outings. A classic silhouette in black or brown leather will make your outfit instantly more elegant while keeping your legs warm on chillier days.

11. Tote Bag

A tote bag is perfect for carrying extra items, whether you’re shopping on Rue de Rivoli or heading to a picnic in one of Paris’s beautiful parks. It’s also what I use to bring my laptop, book and other essentials on the train ride to the city.

Choose a simple, stylish tote in a neutral color that matches your travel wardrobe. In addition to a classic leather tote, I like to pack a foldable version for my purse, which is practical for holding any souvenirs I collect during my trip.

12. Essentials and Extras

Don’t forget to pack your essentials, such as travel-sized toiletries, a power adapter, and a compact umbrella. A weekender bag or carry-on roller is essential for carrying everything in style. Here are a few more items worth considering for your weekend trip to Paris:

  • Scarf and gloves

  • Hat

  • Midi dress

  • Shoulder bag

  • Tights

  • Belt
