We all know how important it is to wear sunscreen every day, even if you are currently spending most of your time indoors — it protects our skin from harmful UV rays and helps prevent premature aging and even skin cancer.

Reapplying your SPF at least every two hours is just as crucial for staying protected. This can seem like an inconvenience especially if you are wearing a full face of makeup. Skipping sunscreen because you don't want to mess up your look is a recipe for sun damage. Luckily, there are ways to wear and reapply sunscreen over makeup without ruining your hard work.

After experimenting with countless products and systems, I discovered some foolproof techniques for reapplying sunscreen over makeup. I’m sharing everything I’ve learned below, plus, my own SPF “routine” that works even when wearing makeup.

Reapplying your SPF at least every two hours is just as crucial for staying protected. This can seem like an inconvenience especially if you are wearing a full face of makeup. After experimenting with countless products and systems, I discovered some foolproof techniques and crafted a flexible SPF routine that works even when wearing makeup.

How to Wear Sunscreen and Makeup

Start with a Base

Before you apply any cosmetic products, protect your skin and prime for foundation with a generous layer of sunscreen. This provides a good base layer of protection. Don’t forget to apply some to your neck and ears too!

Pick a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and both UVA and UVB protection. If you have oily skin, look for oil-free formulas to avoid a greasy feeling.

I typically alternate between Korean and French sunscreens based on my needs. For serious sun protection, especially during the summer months, I rely on the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen. It offers powerful defense without feeling greasy or heavy.

When I’m planning to wear makeup, I reach for my Korean sunscreens. They tend to be more lightweight and hydrating, which prevents them from interfering with foundation or concealer application.

I’ve tested several of the viral K-Beauty sunscreens, but my tried-and-true favorites are the COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50+ and the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun. Both these Korean sunscreens are incredibly popular, but in my experience, they truly deserve the hype! They provide excellent protection while being gentle enough for everyday use.

Don’t Rely on Makeup with SPF

Makeup products formulated with SPF are notoriously unreliable at protecting your skin. The application might not be uniform, and the coverage can easily wear off throughout the day, decreasing the amount of sun protection. If your favorite products contain SPF, consider it an additional layer of defense, but always apply a dedicated sunscreen as well!

Try a Tinted Moisturizer

Swap out heavy foundations for lighter alternatives like BB creams or tinted moisturizers with SPF. This will make it easier to reapply your SPF throughout the day. Plus, you’ll get a hint of tint and additional protection.

I love the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer. It applies beautifully and leaves my skin with a healthy, even complexion. When I want a little more coverage, the IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Natural Matte Foundation is my go-to. It has surprising coverage for a tinted moisturizer, while still being packed with skincare benefits and an impressive SPF 40. My sister first introduced me to this product, and I’ve been obsessed ever since.

Looking for newer, “cleaner” options? Check out the Saie Slip Tint and the Supergoop! Protec(tint) Daily SPF Tint. These options offer light coverage and SPF protection in a lightweight, tinted moisturizer form.

Mix Sunscreen Oil with Foundation

If you prefer using foundation, consider blending a few drops of sunscreen oil or serum with it. This not only protects your skin but also adds a beautiful glow to your makeup look.

The best face oil with SPF has to be the Supergoop! Daily Dose Hydra-Ceramide Boost + SPF 40. Packed with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and squalane, it hydrates and protects your skin, all while offering SPF 40 protection. Simply add a few drops to your foundation for a boost of moisture and sun safety.

Another great option, the Coola Full Spectrum 360° Sun Silk Drops blends beautifully with both moisturizer and foundation. They're perfect for days when you need an extra layer of SPF without disrupting your makeup routine.

Even oily skin types can benefit from this trick! Look for lightweight sunscreen serums formulated specifically for oily or acne-prone skin. These serums mix seamlessly with foundation and offer SPF protection without clogging pores. ZitSticka MEGASHADE Sunscreen Serum is a great option for oily skin. It provides hydration and SPF protection, while also being gentle enough for acne-prone skin.

How to Reapply Sunscreen Over Makeup

Blot Before You Apply

If you're wearing makeup, it's likely that you don't want to remove it entirely every time you need to reapply sunscreen. In a situation where you can't wash your face, opt for blotting papers to soak up any excess oil before reapplying sunscreen. This simple step helps prevent a greasy look, especially when you’re layering several products.

Take a blotting paper and gently press it onto areas of your face that tend to be oily or shiny, such as the forehead, nose, and chin (commonly known as the T-zone). Once your skin is adequately prepped, apply your chosen sunscreen evenly across your face and neck.

Spray on Sun Protection

Set your makeup with a hydrating sunscreen spray. You’ll benefit from the extra sun protection and keep your face in place all day. It’s also convenient for touching up your makeup throughout the day. To apply, hold the spray at arm's length and mist your face with your eyes closed. Be sure to let it dry completely before continuing with your makeup touch-ups.

Make sure you choose a sunscreen spray formulated specifically for the face. Regular sunscreen sprays might not offer a fine mist suitable for delicate facial skin. One of the best sunscreen sprays is the Soleil Toujours Set + Protect Makeup Setting Spray. Not only does it offer SPF 30, but it’s formulated with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin E for a boost of hydration and a flawless finish.

For a budget-friendly option, the e.l.f. SKIN All Set For Sun SPF 45, Setting Spray provides impressive SPF 45 protection in a convenient spray format. For only $14, it's perfect for those looking for an affordable way to add sun protection and extend the wear of their makeup.

Touch Up with Powder

Mineral powder sunscreens are a smart option for applying extra coverage while removing excess oil. They come in loose and compact forms and provide a light layer of sun protection without disturbing your makeup. Apply with a large, fluffy brush, focusing on areas exposed to the sun like your forehead, cheeks, and nose.

I’ve been using the Supergoop! (Re)setting 100% Mineral Powder SPF 35 for years, and it’s my favorite for on-the-go sun protection. It mattifies my skin and comes with a built-in brush, perfect for beach days and city escapes. Plus, the brush distributes the product perfectly for me (although some reviews mention issues with the application).

If you're looking for a tinted option, the Colorescience Sunforgettable® Total Protection™ Brush-On Shield SPF 50 is a popular choice. It offers SPF 50 protection and a hint of color for a touch of coverage. I'm adding this one to my shopping list for summer.

Sponge It On

For those who love a radiant, dewy look, you can reapply sunscreen over makeup using a beauty blender or cushion puff. Dab your preferred makeup sponge lightly into a liquid sunscreen and then gently press the product onto your face. This technique allows for even application without smudging your makeup.

For flawless reapplication with a sponge, choose an ultra-fluid sunscreen formula. My favorite is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Sunscreen – it blends seamlessly while keeping your makeup in place.

If you’re looking for extra coverage, cushion foundations are a great option. They offer buildable coverage and often come with SPF protection. You can find the best selection of cushion foundations from K-Beauty brands. The EM Cosmetics Cloud Dream is a fantastic buildable option I highly recommend.

No cushion foundation? No problem! Pack your favorite sunscreen and BB cream in your bag. When you need a boost of SPF, mix them together and reapply a thin layer using a cushion puff. This clever hack is affordable and lets you customize your coverage and sun protection.

Go for a Sunscreen Stick

Sunscreen sticks are compact and easy to carry, making them perfect for on-the-go touch-ups. Unlike traditional sunscreen lotions or sprays, sunscreen sticks offer mess-free application. You can apply the sunscreen directly onto your skin without worrying about spills, leaks, or getting your hands messy.

Simply swipe a thin layer of the sunscreen stick directly onto your face and blend it gently with your fingers or a sponge. While they may not provide heavy-duty coverage, they're perfect for quick touch-ups throughout the day.

I'm currently obsessed with the Abib Quick Sunstick. In my opinion, it’s the best sunscreen to reapply over makeup! It's always in my bag for whenever I need a quick reapplication.

How much sunscreen should I use on my face?

For the face and neck, the general rule is to use about a nickel-sized amount of sunscreen to ensure proper coverage. Adjust as needed based on your specific skin type and individual needs.

My Daily SPF Routine

Here is my SPF routine for a typical day. I always start my morning by applying an SPF 30 sunscreen to my face and neck. If I’m not wearing pants and long sleeves, I apply an SPF 50 sunscreen to my body. I prefer a higher SPF for my body — the level of sun protection doesn’t degrade as quickly, so I don’t have to reapply to a large area as often. Then I apply a hand cream and lip balm for coverage on these often forgotten spots. I finish my morning SPF routine by applying a CC cream.

The afternoon varies depending on my sun exposure. On days when I receive minimal sun exposure i.e. working indoors all day, I don’t reapply my sunscreen. My morning routine usually is sufficient to last throughout the day. When I get moderate sun exposure i.e. spend some time outdoors, I like to reapply my SPF by using a cushion foundation, powder and/or makeup mist.

Depending on the state of my makeup, I will use just one or all of these products. When I am sweating or receiving heavy sun exposure i.e. exercising outdoors or going to the beach, I reapply sunscreen to my face and body every two hours. I also try to wear sun-protective clothing including a large hat, sunglasses, and long sleeves.

This routine can be easily adapted to fit your lifestyle. You can always add or remove products based on your daily activities, the amount of makeup you wear, and your budget. The key is to reapply — and make sure your makeup still looks incredible!
