What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of essential pieces that are carefully selected to create a versatile and functional wardrobe. Curating a capsule wardrobe simplifies the process of getting dressed each day, streamlining your closet to include only items that you love and that suit your personal style.
The concept is all about quality over quantity, focusing on timeless, well-fitting pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a wide range of outfits. Capsule wardrobes are often organized by season and can be customized to suit individual preferences and lifestyle needs. French Riviera Packing List
French Riviera Capsule Wardrobe
This French Riviera capsule wardrobe features 15 key pieces: 3 tops, 2 bottoms, 1 dress, 2 swimsuits, 2 pairs of shoes and 5 accessories which will allow you to put together several outfits. It includes neutral-colored pieces that can be worn with both casual and dressy looks as well as timeless items inspired by classic French Riviera style such as a poplin dress, linen tops, wide leg pants, a basket bag, and espadrilles.
Dresses
1. Midi dress. A versatile midi dress is a summer staple that’s perfect for a getaway to the Cote d’Azur. It’s comfortable, effortlessly stylish, and transitions seamlessly from beach to bar. Dress it up with espadrilles and statement earrings for an elevated evening outfit or keep it casual with some strappy metallic sandals for daytime.

2. Linen button-down shirt. Breathable, practical, and oh-so-chic, a linen button-down shirt is a non-negotiable for your French vacation wardrobe. Dress it up with structured shorts and sandals for a chic dinner outfit, or layer it over a tank top or swimsuit for added coverage. I’d recommend packing a few shirts in different colors.
3. Sleeveless shirt. For extra hot days, a sleeveless shirt is both chic and practical. Opt for lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen in classic colors such as navy or white. Pair it with tailored shorts for a casual day out or dress it up with white pants for an evening dinner.
4. Striped top. A classic striped top is a must-have for your Riviera wardrobe. It’s nautical but incredibly timeless, so it works amazingly in a capsule wardrobe. I’ve selected a striped tube top, but you can also opt for a Breton tee or any other variation that suits your style.

5. Twill shorts. Shorts are a no-brainer when packing for the warm weather. But to elevate your South of French style, I’d recommend bringing along a pair of tailored shorts. Compared to denim shorts, they make casual outfits more polished — perfect for everything from beachside strolls to outdoor dinners. And if shorts aren't your thing, no worries, this capsule wardrobe works just as well with a skirt or tailored trousers.
6. Linen pants. Nothing says Riviera chic like a pair of crisp white linen pants. Lightweight and breathable, they’re effortlessly elegant and ideal for warm summer days. Style them with a striped Breton top for a nautical-inspired ensemble or layer with a sleeveless shirt for a more polished look.

7. Strappy sandals. Essential for any summer getaway, strappy sandals are stylish, comfortable, and perfect for exploring the French Riviera. I've opted for a flat, metallic pair for this wardrobe, though a heeled version could elevate your evening attire if you prefer.
8. Espadrilles. A quintessential summer footwear choice, espadrilles look effortlessly elegant on the Cote d’Azur. You can find them in a variety of styles and colors, but for this French summer capsule, I’ve opted for a heeled, lace-up pair that are perfect for evenings. Pair them with shorts, skirts, or sundresses for an effortlessly stylish summer look.

9. Wicker clutch. While packing for a seaside vacation, don't forget about the evenings. A wicker clutch is a perfect for dinners, drinks, and nights out. I’m obsessed with this navy blue option from Frances Valentine that’s perfect for a trip to the French Riviera.
10. Basket bag. A basket bag is the epitome of summer style, perfect for carrying all your essentials to the beach and beyond. In my summer capsule wardrobe, I’ve chosen a casual woven tote from Muuñ, but you could opt for a more structured bag like this top-handle bag (so chic for only $60) if you prefer a more polished look.

11. Sunglasses. A good pair of sunglasses is a non-negotiable for summer. Choose a pair with good UV protection and lenses that complement your face shape. Classic aviators or wayfarers never go out of style, but don't be afraid to experiment with trendy oversized frames or mirrored lenses. For a vintage-inspired look, I love a pair of cat-eye sunglasses that exude old Hollywood glamour. Perfect for the South of France!
12. Sun hat. A stylish sun hat is the ultimate summer accessory. It protects your face, neck, and scalp from the sun's rays while keeping you cool and comfortable. For Mediterranean vacays, a wide-brimmed floppy hat is a chic option, while a foldable straw fedora is a more practical piece to pack.
13. Scarf. Nothing is more chic than a silk scarf. Wrap it delicately around your neck, wear it as a belt, or (my favorite) tie it around a bun or ponytail for instant elegance. If you want to channel the iconic style of stars like Grace Kelley and Audrey Hepburn, then be sure to add a scarf to your French Riviera packing list!

How to Build a French Riviera Capsule Wardrobe
By building a capsule wardrobe for the Cote d’Azur, you’ll spend less time getting dressed and create a selection of beach-ready outfits suitable for your travels. You’ll always look put-together and be able to pack lightly without having to worry about what you’re going to wear. Here's how to create a French Riviera capsule wardrobe for 2024.
1. Assess Your Vacation Itinerary
Consider the activities you'll be participating in during your trip and tailor your capsule wardrobe accordingly. If you'll be doing a lot of walking or hiking, prioritize comfort with supportive footwear and moisture-wicking clothing. You might pack your favorite sportswear and a trusty pair of sneakers for more active adventures.
For evenings out, pack a pair of heeled sandals or espadrilles to elevate your outfits. A lightweight linen blazer adds instant polish and can be layered over dresses or tops on cooler evenings.
For longer vacations, consider packing a few additional pieces. Think versatile dresses, extra swimwear options, and mix-and-match basics that complement your core capsule. This will give you more outfit options without taking up too much space in your suitcase.
2. Choose a Cohesive Color Palette
Select a cohesive color palette for your beach wardrobe, focusing on classic hues that can easily mix and match. A neutral color palette will allow you to create more timeless outfits with fewer pieces, so begin by investing in pieces in colors such as white, cream, beige, navy, etc. Then incorporate one or two accent colors to add interest to your looks. You might try lighter shades like baby blue and butter yellow, or go for something bolder like bright orange or Mediterranean blue. For this French Riviera capsule wardrobe, I choose navy blue, black, white and gold.
3. Start with the Basics
Building a French Riviera capsule wardrobe starts with versatile basics that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of looks. Invest in timeless pieces like everyday sundresses, lightweight trousers, and classic button-down shirts in neutral tones such as white, navy, and beige. These foundation pieces will serve as the building blocks for your Riviera-inspired outfits, allowing you to effortlessly transition from day to night with ease.
4. Include Resort Wear Essentials
To achieve the relaxed glamour of the French Riviera, incorporate resort wear essentials into your capsule wardrobe. Pack breezy maxi dresses, flowy kaftans, and chic jumpsuits in lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton. Don't forget to pack a stylish swimsuit, a wide-brimmed hat to protect you from the sun, and a lightweight cover-up for when you're ready to head to lunch at a beachside café. A pair of chic flip-flops and a beach tote are also must-haves for carrying all your seaside essentials.
5. Add Coordinating Accessories
Elevate your South of France outfits with coordinating accessories. Incorporate timeless pieces like a woven beach bag, strappy sandals, and oversized sunnies. Pack a few statement jewelry pieces (I’m loving bangles lately), sarongs, or hats to brighten up your beach wardrobe. Accessories are the finishing touches that tie your look together and upgrade a basic outfit.
