The key to a better day is a good night’s rest. It’s no surprise that many of us have poor sleep quality. I know I’m guilty of working on my laptop late into the evening, then trying to get in 8-9 hours of shuteye. However, I’ve recently implemented a bedtime routine that has drastically improved my sleep. One major part of my routine is turning off my electronics as early as possible to limit my exposure to artificial light. The second important piece of my routine is creating a relaxing environment. When it’s time to get into bed, I try to create a calming ambiance to switch from work to sleep mode.
The products that I use in my routine are all affordable finds from Amazon. These items are incredibly beneficial if you struggle to fall asleep or stay sleep during the night, and you can use them in your own nighttime routine. Here are some of my favorite sleep products that you can shop on Amazon to wake up in the morning feeling rested.
Sleep Mask
I feel like the glamorous Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s while wearing a sleep mask, but it has also been a game changer for my sleep. It blocks out external light sources from your windows, phone, TV, digital clock, etc. that can lead your brain to believe that you’re awake and disrupt your sleep. I always wear a silk or satin as it is more delicate around your eye area and won’t damage your skin like a rougher cotton material.
Silk Pillowcase
If you dream of waking up with gorgeous skin and hair, then swap your cotton pillowcase for a silk or satin one. Similar to an eye mask, the material of your pillowcase can impact your skin, especially if you move around a lot in your sleep. A few months ago, I switched to a silk pillowcase, and my skin feels less irritated and even absorbs my nighttime skincare products better. They also feel cool and lush on my skin that sends me right to sleep.
Bedtime tea
A natural way to unwind before bed is to sip on some zzz-inducing tea. Chamomile, valerian root lavender teas are great options help you drift off to a peaceful sleep. You can opt for other varieties of tea, just make sure that they are caffeine-free. I always drink a cup of tea one hour before going to bed to relax. I love brewing a large pot of tea with my tea infuser and enjoying multiple cups while I journal, read and prepare my to-do list for the next day.
Melatonin
On nights when I’m struggling to fall asleep, I reach for melatonin, the sleep-supporting superstar that is amazing for getting a healthier night’s rest. It’s a natural sleep hormone that helps with your body’s circadian rhythms and with sleep. If you’re new to melatonin, talk with your doctor about what amount is right for you. By implementing proper bedtime habits, you might not need the supplement, but it’s always useful if you’re taking an international flight, having an irregular sleep schedule or feeling stressed.
Weighted blanket
I used to believe weighted blankets were just for added warmth until I discovered the other magical effects of using them. Weighted blankets have been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety by providing a comforting, gentle weight on your body. You don’t need to be concerned about being hot if you choose the appropriate blanket weight for you: around 10% of your body weight. Add one on top of your comforter and you’ll enjoy a restful night of sleep.
White noise machine
When I was younger I used to sleep with my trusty old box fan blowing all night. Now I’ve opted for a less-clunkier option: a sleek, portable white noise machine. With these handy devices you can play white noise and fan sounds to help block out disruptive environmental noises and distractions in my bedroom. It also allows you to set a time interval so your machine isn’t running all night.
